Sakari Sushi

We went to this place because we wanted to enjoy some food on the beach at English Bay but we didn’t have any picnic food packed. This place offered us a view of the beach and the food.
As soon as you walk in, you will realize that this restaurant does not have very much to offer in terms of ambience. If you get a patio seat though, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the bustling beachfront down below. There are great views of English Bay and good classic rock music blasting from the pub next door, although I think I am now advertising for that pub.

Overall the service was good, however I found it surprising that tea wasn’t served automatically (without asking) like at most sushi restaurants. Another letdown was that the tea was cold! This place is way pricier than most sushi places but that is probably due to their high rental costs because of their scenic and central location. Two can dine for approximately $30, however you won't be very full and this only includes ordering a main course.

We ordered three different temaki (cones) and a tempura udon. The temaki was tasty (especially the California cone). The tempura udon was your basic fried vegetables and shrimp and on the side was a large hot bowl of udon soup. The tempura was okay, but the soup was just broth and barely any noodles. I was also disappointed when my tiny spoon sank to the bottom of the huge bowl. This is a good analogy for what this restaurant is… sinking.

Overall, it is not the best food and atmosphere and you will pay a fairly high price for this disappointment. If I want to eat sushi and enjoy the beach views I will probably just have take-out from a better sushi place and sit right at the beach.

Hi Lucie and Nimalan,

even though I've been a year now in Vancouver I haven't tried much sushi restaurants! This is mainly because Gabriela doesn't like seafood, so we always end up somewhere else. But I have made a promise to myself that I will start learning about good places to eat sushi in Vancouver so thanks for the comments about the Sakari Sushi! Hopefully you will post more about other sushi places :D

I think that many restaurant in the Downtown and English Bay area get used to always have customers due to the their good touristy location and somehow go mediocre with food and service. At least that has been my experience with the "Ukranian Village" located in Denman and Robson, and also with "Milestones" @ English Bay. In the first case I ordered the duck stuffed with apples and it turned out to be a totally overcooked (I am sure they warm it up in a microwave) skinny little piece of leg with a ridiculous amount of apple below the skinny leg (it was so skinny that there was no Duck to fill with the apple). I won't even mention the attitude of the owners after telling them my opinion (they asked so I answered honestly) because it makes me really mad. In summary, won't go there for sure!

The Milestones experience wasn't SOOOOO bad, but service was terribly slow, the fish I had was cold and even the salad I had was supposed to have avocados but I didn't see/taste any. Overall, the food was boring. After telling the waitress they offered me a lame excuse (they were waiting for all the dishes to be ready, which explains the cold of the food but not the absence of avocados) and gave me a kind of invitation/ticket to come back and get a free entree when buying an appetizer. Even though I don't like their solution, at least they tried to provide one. But anyway, I am not coming back there neither.

Thank you guys!
